You never know what surprises nature can hide for you!
So we, too, set out to explore the difficult path that leads to one of the thousands of caves in Greece.
Our starting point, the village of Kefalovryso, Prefecture of Etoloakarnania, very close to the well-known Messolonghi.
The view of the lagoon and the green olive groves made us look forward to our special destination.
Most of the path is rocky, so you definitely need hiking shoes as the stones are slippery in many places. All along there are red signs to help you not get lost. Some local volunteer group has taken care of that. Also, the path to the cave is uphill. Nevertheless, from our own experience, the route is not particularly difficult and certainly with a little attention, every walker will be able to complete it. With the necessary stops with small snacks and water for hydration of course!
Looking back, we also saw the town of Aitolikos, which if seen from above reminds of Venice. (photo)
We walked for about an hour and a half, until in the distance we saw the cave and the unique natural beauty with the imposing rocks. We had almost reached the chapel. There, a small waterfall dominates, which creates natural pedestals. The beauty is incredible!
Indeed, as we had been informed, the point just before you go up into the cave is quite steep, natural steps have been created to make it a bit easier and iron steps have been installed so that one can climb up to the top.
Climbing up, you are in awe of the whole scenery. The depth of the cave is about 12 meters and the opening of 8. Inside are still clearly visible frescoes from the 10th century, and there is also a stone iconostasis and the icon of Saint Nicholas.
Stopping at the cave is necessary, for some rest, photos and of course to enjoy the tranquility of the place. We are accompanied by some wild goats who have the opportunity to be there all the time and enjoy this unique view!!
It’s time to go back! Experienced now, and satisfied with our course that rewarded all our expectations.
Total route about 6 km, at our pace 4 hours and the altitude around 470.
It is something different, so it is worth to hike it and enjoy the magic of nature.
